BRTS Station

Name of the Project

BRTS Station.

Introduction

Surat is one of the fastest growing city of India. Recognizing the increase in Traffic congestion and to resolve the mobility issues, the city reinvented itself by initiating an integrated transport system development for which the city defines the mobility vision as ‘SARAL’ which stands for Safe, Accessible, Reliable, Advanced and Low-carbon mobility in Surat. Saral also means SIMPLE in Indian languages and it states that 'Saral Parivahan – Sumrudh Janjeevan' meaning "Simple Transport towards ensuring Prosperous and Enriching Quality of Life for people of Surat".

SMC introduced Bus Rapid Transit System in January 2014 with a dedicated corridor length of 10.20 km at that time and then after the BRTS network is expanded in city with dedicated BRTS network of 108 km length, which is India’s longest dedicated BRTS network. SMC has also innovatively developed the BRTS corridor along the Canals with aesthetic landscaping. SMC has formed a Special Purpose Vehicle named “Surat Sitilink Limited” which is responsible meant for finance, operations, and administration of Surat Public Transportation services.

In Brief

On BRTS Corridor, there are 163 BRTS bus stations for the easy boarding and alighting for the passengers. All the BRTS stations are equipped with smart IT infrastructure which includes Intelligent Transit Management system, Automatic Fare Collection system, Automatic Sliding door and CCTV surveillance system. There are total 30 BRTS routes which are operational within the city with an average ridership of 1.60 lakhs per day. Total 176 BRTS buses are deployed in the system, which includes 127 AC diesel BRT buses and 49 electric buses. SMC also aims to replace all the Diesel Buses by Electric buses in the BRTS route by 2023 with a vision of Green Mobility for Public Transportation system.

Due to introduction of BRTS in the city, 75 % of BRTS users have shifted from 3 wheelers (shared auto rickshaws) and two wheelers, according to user satisfaction survey. The City has also launched Common City Payment System (Surat Money Card) which can be used in public transport service as well as in government services (Library, Swimming Pool, Income Tax), and in commercial outlets. Surat is the second city in India to introduce real time transit information via Google Maps through Google Transit Feed Specification (GTFS). SMC has developed Single ticketing system with fare integration with an aim of Single Ticket, Single Journey to make travel convenient for the people of the city. All these features makes the BRT system, a high quality, ultra-modern and passenger oriented rapid transit system to deliver fast, comfortable, economical and eco-friendly mobility to the citizens.
