Breif Description

The canal corridor development projects were taken up by Surat Municipal Corporation to improve the present unhealthy condition prevailing along the existing canal and to have maximum utilization of the road width within the city, and to built such an environment along the canal road which not only will improve the mobility on the corridor but will build an environment friendly atmosphere for their smart citizens within the city, The present project deals with the development of 60 mt. wide and 3.00 km long canal corridor from Anuvrat Dwar junction to Jamnaba park in South-West Zone in the city.

The basic idea was to ensure that the existing space around the present canal is converted to sufficiently wide road far transport mobility with pedestrian safety and also to develop a walkway with suitable landscape environment on either side of the canal.

With a full stretch of more than 100-feet wide greenbelt, which goes along the total road length of more than 2500 mt. and it provides a healthy environment full of large number of local species of plants, Flowering plants, medicinal plants, etc and also recreational facilities such as play areas, gathering place to the citizens. Citizens can get a recreational spot in their own neighborhood and this road will also prove as leisure activity areas for kids and senior citizens with lot of greenery and happening places.

Surat Municipal Corporation have developed recreational zones along the canal road with landscape area on either sides which incorporates facilities such as street furniture, park, children play area, canal crossings, parking facilities etc.

Following activity are incorporated in project for different category:

  • Looking into the vast portion of citizens residing in the vicinity, Surat Municipal Corporation has made provision for Jogger's park; Children play area, Walkways & seating, Senior Citizen Park.
  • Use of seasonal plants in landscape, Provision of parking area, Provision of hawking zone, Art gallery.
  • SMC have designed exclusive, dedicated and attractive 10.5 meter PQC road with 2.5 meter wide Footpath on both sides of roads along with street furniture for road users.
  • For physically challenged citizens, tactile paving & Bollards are also installed at entry point with ease of physical challenge people.
  • Traffic and road signs are also erected in buffer zone at sides/above roads to guide/caution road users.
  • Railing provided on both side of canal as well as Between Road and Landscape for Safety purpose.
  • Utility Crossing at every 250 mtr interval on both side of canal to prevent future digging.
  • Total 2 No of Parking Space allocated in between the canal landscape area for median parking. In order to achieve landscape walkway for pedestrians.
  • The total road project was completed within 22 months on date 29/02/2020 with a project cost of Rs. 54.41Crores
